Man is but a reed, the most feeble thing in nature;

but he is a thinking reed. The entire universe need not arm itself to crush him. A vapour, a drop of water suffices to kill him.

But, if the universe were to crush him, man would still be more noble than that which killed him, because he knows that he dies and the advantage which the universe has over him;

the universe knows nothing of this. All our dignity consists, then, in thought. By it we must elevate ourselves, and not by space and time which we cannot fill.

Let us endeavour, then, to think well;

this is the principle of morality.

人間は葦よね、ほんま自然界では弱々しい命よね。

そいでも人間は考えて歌う葦よ。全宇宙がうちらを潰そうとするんなら力なんかいらんけえね。簡単よ、蒸気かひとしずくの水滴で十分に殺せるわいね。

ほいじゃがね、もし宇宙がうちらを押し潰したいんならね、うちはそれでもなお、うちを殺しにきた自然に向かってね、毅然と殺されてみせちゃるけえね。よう聞きんさいよ、うちはね、知っちょるんじゃけえ、自分が死に行く存在じゃって事をね、ほいで宇宙はうちらの上をただ通り過ぎてゆくだけの巨大な存在に過ぎんちゅう事じゃってね。

宇宙はうちを殺した事にゃ気付きもせんじゃろ。そいでもうちが宇宙と対峙できとるんは、たぶん、うちが考える存在じゃけえよ。こうしてうちは生きとる。この世界はうちの手じゃ汲み尽くせん事もよう知っとるけえ。

そいじゃからこの先に行けるんよ、そうよね、考えるちゅう事だけをうちは手にして行くんよ。

それだけがうちらの道じゃないんかいね、ほうじゃろ。

A thinking reed.

-- It is not from space that I must seek my dignity, but from the government of my thought. I shall have no more, if I possess worlds.

By space the universe encompasses and swallows me up like an atom;

by thought I comprehend the world.

考える葦。人間ちゅうのが宇宙の中におると考えちゃいけんよ、うちが人間を探すんならね、そりゃ、うちらの思索の中にするんと思うんよ。それだけで世界を理解するのに十分なんよ。

宇宙はうちを包み込んで、飲み込んで、最後にゃバラバラにするんじゃろう。

そいでも、考える事でうちは世界を抱きしめとる気になっとるんよ。
